Today’s garden journal is about a field trip – blueberry picking! If you know me, or follow me on Instagram, you know that blueberries are my favorite fruit. I eat blueberries every day as part of my breakfast, and often again as part of my dessert. Since we don’t have enough space on our homestead to keep me in blueberries 365 days a year, I go picking at local farms whenever I can.
Today was my second time picking this season, and it was also the second time it’s rained while I was picking. I’m beginning to sense a theme here… In all honesty, though, it’s kind of nice to pick on a rainy day. It’s not blisteringly hot, crowds are almost non-existent, and the rain washes the fruit for you, so you can eat as you pick.
I am starting to feel like I have a bit of blueberry magic, though. On both picking days, it rained before we started, stopped just as we were ready to pick, and then started again as soon as we were done. If that’s not a little bit of everyday magic, I don’t know what is!
The best part of today was definitely getting to spend time with my mom and bonus mom. I am so lucky to have these amazing women in my life! And even luckier that they are friends, too. Not every person gets to willingly spend time with their parent and in-law, but I do. We started the day with breakfast (and coffee, of course!) at my favorite café in town, wandered through the local bookshop, and then picked berries to our hearts’ content. It was the perfect Sunday.
Since I have so many blueberries already, these are getting washed and going straight into the freezer. My hope is that I have plenty of seasonal berries to get me through the winter this year.
Nothing like fresh frozen berries. I love freezing the berries from our yard.
Yes! Frozen berries are amazing. I hope to someday have enough blueberries in our own yard to freeze what we grow!
